EA takes tough stance on Battlefield 2 stat padding

Postby Merlin on Thu Sep 01, 2005 11:06 pm

THE FOLKS RUNNING the back-end of Battlefield 2 have stepped up to the plate in order to take a tough stance on those seeking to abuse the online game's persistent stats tracking feature.
Holes in the system which tracks all players across a large number of "ranked" servers have been discovered before, and one group of hackers proved the point by hacking no less than five million accounts last July.

Now EA is taking a much tougher stance, sending along a letter to all operators of ranked servers, which must be validated by EA in order to receive ranked status, says that groups of players together in clans who are "padding" their stats are to be banned without mercy.

"Padding" is any form of intentional modification to the style of play employed so that clan members can increase their stats, unlocking new weapons. Clans who own ranked servers have been going so far as to change the rules by which people must play on their servers so that their members may accrue more points.

With the tough new rules anyone now padding stats is to be removed from a server along with all their clan mates who can be denoted by the tags which they carry in their name, and if a clan server is found to be padding stats then it is to be removed from the ranked servers and if the clan persists, the game itself.

ea is just a bunch of bitches
When 70% of the people who get arrested are black, in cities where 70% of the population is black, that is not racial profiling, it is the Law of Probability. Image Image

Yeah, and they are going to enforce this arbitrary finger pointing and name calling game, how?

No there next step will be saying only EA can run ranked servers, and you'll have to buy a server and some huge cost from EA.

They were already a hair away from doing that back in the public beta days. Remember, back when EA screamed that private server admins that changed the default time limit of the beta servers were hackers and were going to destroy the gaming community? EA said that they were going to be forced to have only the rented servers being ranked because they couldn't trust all these dishonest server admins. (Isn't it lovely when they call their most dedicated customers hacks and cheats?)

It's a hollow (implied) threat, just like it was previously. Some idiot working there (they have thousands to pick from) got a bug up their ass about this and let their PR department speak before anyone with a brain stepped in to consider what they were/are saying really means.

Who seriously cares about the "ranked" servers? Only clans that want to compete and show how dorkily uber they are, that's who. The casual, average gamer? They could care less. Yeah, it's neat the whole "rank" thing. Yet they are not the ones that would spend all the time "faking their stats", they just want to play, and play with the unlocked items. If someone gives them grief and blocks them from the ranked servers, they'll just go to the "unranked" ones that have the content unlocked. As for the clans? Worse come to worse and they flag a clan's tag? Woopydo, the clan just subtlely changes their tag. You can't keep changing the EA filters without eventually starting to flag a lot of false-positives on multiple customers in lumps, not just individuals. And very soon EA will be flooded with E-mails and phone calls about "BS flagging". And just as quickly as they implemented this whole moronic "stat padding banning", it will be lifted.

If the people at EA would think more than 20 minutes ahead of their press releases, you'd never hear a thing from them.
