Athlon 64 X2 vs Opertron 170 x2

Postby Merlin on Wed Dec 14, 2005 10:15 pm

Was thinking of getting a 64 X2 939 Chip But after a little Reserch i would be better to get an Opteron 170 Duel core. As Per pricewatch.com

AMD Opteron 170 Dual-Core 2.0GHz 1MB (per core) 64/32-Bit - Socket 939 $391.53
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Processor Socket 939 2.0GHz Dual-Core 512KBx2 $319

I have seen many reviews that say the Opteron is Highly overclockable and more stable than the 64X2 Plus it comes with a Full 1 MB Cache as the 64x2 comes with 512k.

For $72 more I think it is worth it what do you think?

from what i understand the Opteron isn't as good for gaming as an Athlon, you may want to do some research, but I thought I was reading about it somewhere

Found this about the Opertron for those who think it is just a server chip. SO it is very much like the FX chip and less like the 64 chip. and now the Opteron 170 supports DDR 400. it also has Three Hypertransport Links with 24 GB Bandwith as opposed to 1 for the A64 with 14.4 GB/s Bandwith.
AMD just wants you to think the A64 is the GAMMING CHIP thats the way they market it. The reviews I have seen show the Opteron and FX neck and neck in most gaming benchmarks without the FX price.

"Many of you might be looking at this CPU and asking, "Isn't that an Opteron?" and you would be close to right. The AthlonFX is very much an Opteron in desktop clothing, right down to the pin count. The differences are that the Opteron is not specified to run DDR400, only DDR333, and officially two of the HyperTransport bus interfaces have been removed from the AthlonFX"

Opteron CPU
Support of three (3) coherent HyperTransport links, providing up to 24.0 GB/s peak bandwidth per processor
Provides up to 24.0GB/s peak bandwidth per processor

Athlon X2
One 16-bit link at 2000MHz
8 GB/s HyperTransport™ technology I/O bandwidth
14.4 GB/s total delivered processor-to-system bandwidth

OPTERON

Postby Merlin on Fri Dec 23, 2005 9:31 pm

I decided on getting the Opteron 165 1.8GHz Dual Core 1-MB cache per core. I am also getting the DFI NF4 SLI INFINITY nForce4 SLI Skt 939 Motherboard. It will have 4 GIG of DDR 400 :)

Have not decided on the video yet.

Hay dude, long time. It's Chris

I've decided to go with dual eVGA 7800GT for my next upgrade.

Also going to stick with ASUS with an A8N-SLI Prem.

As for a Processor I'm undecided between a Option 165 and a 170

What cooler are you going to use ? XP-90?

Dual core 165

Going with the Thermaltake Big Typhoon Cooler It is HUGE and should provide very good overclock I have heard that the Opteron 165 can overclock at least 700MHZ on air alone maybe more.

Have you ever though about liquid cooling? It has become very inexpencive in the past year.

Water Cooling

Postby Merlin on Tue Dec 27, 2005 2:40 pm

I did think of it..... but the Temps on the Opteron are pretty low as is alot cooler than my Prescott P4 is I would consider it for that one it is running at 148 Degrees with a big copper cooler under full load running SETI Client.
The Thermaltake cooler was only $45 and the fan only runs at 1500 RPM so pretty quiet and the reviews have been great on it. The water coolong kit was $155 so It seems like you would have alot of expense and time to set up water cooling the temps seem only to be about 3 to 5 degrees less with watercool, plus I would screw something up or forget to tighten up something and I would end up frying my board and $400 7800GT Video card when it sprung a leak :)
Maybe if I want to get more overclock out of it if the future and have the money I'll do it later when i have more confidance.

Everyone I have ever meet with watercooling in there box doent overclock and says why would I want to do that and Im like you just spent all this money on water cooling why not.

Thanks Mofiki

be caeful with the HSF for that mobo, I have the same DFI board with a zalman fan, it JUST barely fit due to the transistors on the boards, in fact I had to bend a few of the fins on it.
